An intranet is simply the equivalent of a local area
network (LAN) and or, a wide area network (WAN), that is accessible
throughout an organisation by using internet browsers . Instead of using
the folder views and searching for particular documents, users use
hyperlinks and point and click to navigate. For most users, particularly those who are not familiar
with the various applications and programs used by an organisation,
pointing and clicking in a browser is a much simpler and cleaner
operation. For example, to view, say a document about sales, the user
clicks the hyperlink to the document. They can then click another link
that will open the input section of the Sales database. There is no need
to open Word, Excel, Access, etc. or the particular application for the Sales database. The
effect is to reduce the amount of training that is required to
operate a multitude of applications. There can also be a saving in terms of
software licensing. Since most of the processing is done
on the server, there is no requirement to install software, and keep
up-to-date all the latest versions and releases, on each user's machine.
All that is required is a browser. The main one is probably maintenance. All
the links will need to be maintained. Links that lead nowhere are very
frustrating for users. Security must be implemented and
maintained. The access to various databases needs to be carefully designed
and developed.

database. It allows employees to be searched for, by surname, and presents
their details along with a photograph.
This example displays a working Excel spreadsheet preloaded with data
that users can change to test various scenarios. NOTE: You must have I.E.
